The Exe Hammer Challenge – 2021 Edition

2020 proved to be a massive success and a highlight of the paddleboarding year for the circa 140 paddlers that lined up on the start line. 2021 will be even better thanks to the easing of covid restrictions allowing us to deliver our normal event experience. The route on the water was new for 2020 and popular amongst the competitors so shall remain the same (more detail later). The event will start on the beach directly in front of our new watersports centre @ Sideshore Exmouth (EX8 2GD). The challengers will follow a loop course and our primary plan is to start paddling along Exmouth Seafront, first out to sea then back in and past Dawlish Warren, up into the River Exe before looping back to finish back on Exmouth beach. There will be a shorter and a longer route to make sure the distance is appropriate for the type of board you are using and weather conditions. The course will be approximately 8-10 miles* for the faster categories (boards 12’6″ and above) and 4-6 miles* for the slower categories (All boards less than 12’6″). Full on the water safety cover will be provided as well as event completion times for all classes.

This is a challenge for all paddlers and is one of the most popular events on the UK paddleboard calendar. Whether you are in it to race against the other partipants or just in it to challenge yourself and complete the course, you are welcome.

There are a number of different classes that you can enter depending on the type of board that you are paddling and there will be prizes for all categories. If you are unsure as to which class of board you are, please contact us and we can assist. Click the tickets button to see the classes and pick the ticket most appropriate to the board you will be using. All paddlers need to register on this website as there will be no entries on the day. The entries will close at 6pm on 17th September and, due to safety reasons, the entry numbers are capped and did sell out last year!

The race is proudly supported by Hanlons Brewery, Sideshore, Edgewatersports, Hangtime cafe that supply much needed food and drink at the end of the race and Edgewatersports.

Registration for the event will be outside at the new watersports centre @ sideshore from 09:00 where all riders will need to sign in and collect their race bibs. The start time will be approx 10:00-10:30 so be prompt for registration

With a morning registration there should be plenty of parking available at the sideshore location, in Queen’s Drive Car Park and all along Exmouth Seafront. The start and finish are at the same place on Exmouth beach.

All riders are encouraged to follow the Exe Hammer facebook page where any news and updates will occur. https://www.facebook.com/TheExeHammer/

* The course route may change depending on the weather forecast nearer the time. The exact length of each course will be adjusted slightly to account for the weather on the day and is somewhat arbitrary due to our local tidal conditions so distance over ground covered will be different to distance paddled through the water.
